The restructuring and preparation project of “Antiquarium” can be summarized in three main moments:
- the restitution of nineteenth-century axiality in the relationship between the rooms;
- the reintegration of the zenith light through the reopening of the skylights;
- the restoration of three display cases from the 1950s and the reinterpretation of the same in a contemporary key, adding new display cases and bases for the display of the permanent works.
To restore the axiality of the rooms present in the nineteenth-century Antiquarium, numerous walls were demolished because at the opening of the construction site the space was divided into small and semi-dark portions. At the end of the demolitions, during which it was necessary to act with extreme attention due to the presence of previous systems and panels, the space was airy and very bright. We then proceeded to the reconstruction of the electrical and fire prevention systems and to a new resin flooring in a room hosting the casts.
The setting up of the works involved positioning the sculptures and other large finds on bases in lava stone slabs which were then slightly raised on hidden iron structures, to give the impression of the works floating in space. The works were enriched by the use of metal showcases, with slender supports and glass cases resting on lava stone slabs. Similarly, 1×2 meter slabs of lava stone were affixed to the wall to house the didactic apparatus of the sections.
The top floor has been set up to host a bookshop.
Finally, the Petrucci company created a wooden roof covered with vines on the upper terrace, to allow events to take place and proceeded to improve the main terrace on the facade, with seats in wood and iron.
